Jl. Malioboro AreaJl. Malioboro is the main street in Yogya and the immediate vicinity is a reference point for most visitors. For our purposes this area encompasses the areas of Yogyakarta that fall within the immediate vicinity of Jl. Malioboro and the Keraton (Sultan's Palace).Hotels in this area are either located on or are within a city block of Jl. Malioboro just a few minutes walk to the Keraton, museums, restaurants and shops along Jl. Malioboro.
Greater YogyakartaStarting at the Tugu Monument this area encompasses the areas of Yogya that fall outside the area of Jl. Malioboro. Most hotels are located along the main road that changes its name from Jl. Sudirman to Jl. Sumoharjo then to Jl. Adisucipto as it approaches the airport and finally Jl. Solo as it heads east towards Solo and Surakarta. As such, access to and from the aiport, city and tourist destinations outside the city is quick and easy.
Solo / SurakartaSolo, once a rival kingdom of Yogya, is now a partner in developing tourism to central Java. The area's international airport is here. August is great month to visit, the weather is ideal and 17 August is Indonesia's Independence Day, and is always a day full of festivals all over the nation and Yogyakarta is no exception. Games like pole climbing are very competitive and a lot of fun to watch (the poles are well oiled and have expensive prizes at the top). As well some villages use the day to hold cultural activities, special dance performances and bazaars. Check with your hotel staff for interesting ideas.Don't speak Indonesian? Don't worry - nearly everyone working in the tourism industry speaks English (as well as other languages). On the street or in any tourist attraction you're sure to be approached by young Indonesian students looking for a chance to practice English, French, German or whatever. Hotels in Yogyakarta are much better than many may think and offer excellent value for any type of visit or holiday. Btw, be advised that Yogya is a favourite weekend retreat for Indonesians and hotels are often fully booked - especially for the weekend of 17 August so do plan ahead.
